Automated Meter Reading Types

Automated Meter Reading (AMR) is a type of water meter that allows for automatic meter reading without the need for a human to physically read the meter. AMR meters can be read remotely, either wirelessly or through a wired connection, and can provide near real-time data on water usage. This can be helpful in identifying leaks or other issues with water usage, as well as reducing the amount of time and resources needed to manually read water meters.

There are two main types of AMR meters:

Passive Automated Meter Reading (PAMR): PAMR meters use an existing power source, such as the customer’s water pressure, to send data back to the utility company. These meters typically have a longer range than active AMR meters and can provide data more frequently. However, PAMR meters can be more expensive to install and maintain, and may require additional hardware to be installed at the customer’s premises.

Active Automated Meter Reading (AAMR): AAMR meters use a battery-powered transmitter to send data back to the utility company. These meters typically have a shorter range than passive AMR meters, but can provide data more quickly. AAMR meters can be less expensive to install and maintain than PAMR meters, but may require additional hardware to be installed at the customer’s premises.
